"Indian identity belongs to ideas, forms, and materials — not superficial surface motifs or nostalgic craft tropes."

01

Everyday Domestic Archetypes

We look closely at objects that have anchored South Indian domestic life for generations—the rounded water vessel, the hand-pleated coin pouch. We ask what happens when their geometric logic is extracted and rendered with high-fashion discipline.

02

Modern & Sophisticated

Designed for urban, design-conscious individuals who honor Indian culture while demanding world-class contemporary aesthetics. Our pieces feel practical, sophisticated, and commercially wearable—never costume, never tourist artifact.

03

Restraint & Precision

No decorative appliqué, no embroidered clichés. Every curve is deliberate. The cultural resonance emerges from construction, touch, proportion, and quiet functional moments that reveal themselves over years of wear.

Collaborative Craft

Designing Around the Same Table

ARUM does not simply outsource production to anonymous factories. We work directly with skilled local leather artisans as true creative collaborators, bridging intuitive generational knowledge with experimental form.

When we began translating objects like the South Indian kudam or the surukku pai into leather, we didn't just send finished technical tech-packs. We sat with our artisans in the workshop, introduced the concepts, talked through the memories of these objects, and laid out the geometric challenges together.

How do you build a water vessel’s wide base and tapering neck in leather without internal plastic armatures? How does a drawstring gather without bunching or losing its line? These questions were solved through dialogue, trials, and mutual respect. The artisans showed us how leather stretches along its grain; we supported them in exploring new architectural proportions, clean edge-finishes, and minimal hardware solutions.

The intention is for ARUM and its artisan partners to grow together as a creative community. It is not about marketing "ethical fashion" as a tagline — it is simply the natural, human way of making things that have meaning, where the person holding the blade is just as invested in the form as the designer at the sketchbook.

"We don't hand over a drawing and wait for a box. We build prototypes side-by-side. The artisans understand what the silhouette is trying to say, and their hands give it life."
